Event Feature: Building an Ofrenda
One of our favorite experiences of 2019 was building the large ofrenda (alter) for Disney’s sold-out Coco at the Hollywood Bowl shows. After researching the Mexican tradition of honoring ones’ ancestors our event team partnered with internationally acclaimed master artists, Ofelia Esparza and Rosanna Esparza Aherens.
Working in tandem with Ofelia and Rosanna, we commissioned a backdrop and custom-built stage pieces to design and build a multi-tiered ofrenda at the front entrance to the Hollywood Bowl. This included the delivery and setup of over 1,000 marigolds and dozens of items required to bring the ofrenda to life. Their attention to detail was second to none.
To find authentic items to place on the alter, our team went shopping on the historic Olvera Street – a long, narrow, tree-shaded block of Hispanic street vendors and markets. The local Los Angeles bakery, La Monarca, asked their patrons to supply photos of family and friends who had passed to be placed on the ofrenda. Additionally, La Monarca provided freshly baked Pan de Muerto for the display!
The ofrenda was a work of art that was loved by guests of all ages and became a hit on social media throughout the Coco events. Learn more about Ofelia, Rosanna and the ofrenda tradition here.
